I recently had the pleasure of photographing Kate and her 30-year-old mare Dynah during a senior horse photography session. From the very first moment, it was clear how strong their bond is. Dynah may be 30, but she doesn’t look it, and her personality and spirit shone through every frame. Capturing this kind of relationship is exactly why I love photographing senior horses, it’s about preserving memories and celebrating the incredible connection between horse and owner.
Kate shared that Dynah had recently given her a bit of a health scare, which made the session even more meaningful, and thankfully Dynah is doing great. Despite Kate’s busy schedule, working two jobs and attending college as a nursing student, we made the session happen. She shared their story with me:
“I started leasing Dynah when she was 18 and have now owned her for 7 years. I showed her in local dressage shows and earned our bronze medal together. I learned real quick how to stick in the saddle, she loves to run. She is very sweet but also very stubborn, and has taught me so much about patience, which is something she has helped me with the most. She has always been there when I needed to talk, and I have cried many tears with her by my side. She is my heart horse and will never be forgotten.”
Capturing the Bond Between Owner and Senior Horse
Spending time with Kate and Dynah made it clear that they share a special connection. Every nuzzle, glance, and quiet moment between them was a story worth capturing. Senior horse photography is more than just pictures, it’s about preserving the history, personality, and bond of a horse that has been a part of someone’s life for decades.
Why Senior Horse Photography Matters
Older horses deserve to have their stories documented. Photographing senior horses celebrates their life, their relationship with their owner, and the memories they have created together. Each session creates images that can be cherished forever, making it possible to look back on the time spent with these incredible animals.
