Sidney, Maine — Making a positive impact in the lives of people and horses.
I’ve been working with Mel, the owner-operator of Tales of Maine, photographing her and her horses for her upcoming business website. Mel offers horseback riding instruction and facilitates equine assisted therapy. She helps children and adults overcome challenges such as depression, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and low self-esteem.
Mel is pictured here with her 16-year-old purebred Morgan mare, Carina, one of the horses she uses for her equine therapy program and her master therapy horse. Carina shares her wisdom and unconditional love. She helps people feel seen and understood and offers instant feedback on a person’s inner state with non-judgmental reflections of their emotions.
Mel shared, “I can’t imagine my life without Carina for many reasons, but mostly because she offers herself as a divine mirror of how I feel. I can always trust that it is the most accurate reflection of what I need to work on.”
Capturing moments like these through equine therapy photography is such a privilege. It is about documenting not just the horse, but the meaningful connection and trust that allows people to grow and heal. Spending time photographing Mel and Carina reminded me how much horses can teach us about patience, acceptance, and empathy.
I love what you are doing, Mel. The world can never have enough kindness, and I am grateful you shared it with me.
